چکیده

Using a pure, bacteria-free culture of Nostoc muscorum as a bioassay test organism, it was found that the water of Bass Lake, Livingston Co., Michigan, had a severe phosphate deficiency and less severe deficiencies of K, Fe, Mn, and Mg. Emission spectrographic analyses showed that the concretions had Ca as the principal constituent, Mg as the major impurity, and Fe, Si, Mn, Al, and Sr as minor impurities. When boiled, the lake water formed a white precipitate of CaC03, which could be prevented by the addition of a very small amount of KtHPOd. It is suggested that concretion formation in marl lakes is associated with extreme phosphate deficiency.

Nucleation of celestite and strontianite on a cyanobacterial s-layer.

Synechococcus strain GL24 is a unicellular cyanobacterium that was isolated from Fayetteville Green Lake, New York, a meromictic lake which has high Ca and SO(4) concentrations. Epicellular mineralization of Synechococcus cells in the lake is the mechanism by which extensive calcitic bioherms (or microbial reefs) have been formed on the lake's shore and a marl sediment has been built on the lak...

In Cedar Creek Bog, Minnesota Stratigraphic Distribution of Lipoid Substances

The lake and bog deposits of Cedar Creek Forest, Isanti and Anoka counties, Minnesota, consist of a multiple-facies accumulation of marl, peat, copropel, and sapropel. Chromatographic analyses of the lipoid extracts of samples of the sediments show measurable amounts of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons as well as large proportions of asphalts and polar lipoid compounds. In general compositio...

A 14,000-year environmental change history revealed by mineral magnetic data from White Lake, New Jersey, USA

The increasing use of magnetic parameters as a proxy for environmental change necessitates the understanding of processes that link magnetic properties of sediments, especially organic-rich lake sediments, and environmental change. To explore the magnetic mineralpaleoenvironment link, we have recovered a 14,000 yr mineral-magnetic record fromWhite Lake, a hardwater lake containing organicrich s...

Thegenesis of micro-landforms of muddy and salty plains of Urmia Lake

Introduction Urmia Lake is one of the word-scale large hypersaline lakes with about 5500 square kilometers in the Turkish-Iranian Plateau (NW Iran). The lake surrounded by mountains with a mean elevation of about 2000 meters and the highest peak of 4811 meters. The lake charge with 28 permanent and ephemeral rivers. As a result of anthropogenic and natural reasons, the lake exposed to the rapi...

Carbon budget for a groundwater-fed lake: Calcification supports summer photosynthesis

A chemical budget analysis for Williams Lake, Minnesota, tracks the seasonal progression of carbon inputs and outputs. CO, exchanges with the atmosphere reverse seasonally, with uptake by the lake in summer preceded and followed by larger losses to the atmosphere. Calcium bicarbonate-rich groundwaters seep steadily into the lake, augmented by remobilization of lacustrine marls. Most of the carb...
